Ambitious about Autism Manifesto
Autistic people are more likely to be excluded from school, be unemployed, and die prematurely. This is not inevitable. Government action can change this.
We want each political party to commit to these five changes to enable autistic children and young people to achieve at school, get good jobs, and be physically and mentally healthy.
1. Make every school an autism inclusive school, by introducing mandatory autism training for all education staff, with a stronger outreach role for special schools and colleges.
2. Reduce autism diagnosis waiting times, by increasing the number of diagnostic professionals, and training 500 early years autism specialists.
3. Create a bridge from education into work, by piloting employment, health and care plans for autistic young people as they leave education, to prevent them becoming NEET.
4. End the detention of autistic young people in inpatient units, by investing in early mental health support for autistic young people and reforming the Mental Health Act.
5. Be accountable for improving autistic lives, by appointing a National Autism Commissioner.
Our vision is for every autistic young person to achieve their ambitions.
Delivering these five commitments will shift our focus away from crisis management, towards promoting autistic achievement, employment and health.
Will you stand with autistic children and young people?
