Supporting nonspeaking autistic people's flourishing

Misconceptions about autistic people —especially nonspeaking autistic people —abound. In this talk, Vikram Jaswal describes how they have been collaborating with nonspeaking autistic people and using the tools of cognitive science to correct some of these misconceptions. Vikram will offer examples from research they have conducted on communication, literacy, and augmented reality. More accurately characterizing nonspeaking autistic people’s strengths and challenges is essential to creating environments where they can flourish.

Vikram Jaswal is Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia. He is a developmental psychologist whose research focuses on communication and social interaction in autism, particularly nonspeaking autism.
